Cigarette Break 08: Benadryl Coma
On this episode of the Almost Bare Podcast, Lyndsay Soprano and Jon Ramirez take a Cigarette Break, for the second time this week, to discuss chronic pain, drug use, and Benadryl comas!
Jon starts off the episode by filling everyone in on what went down behind the scenes of Monday’s recording, and asking Lyndsay what the fuck happened??
Lyndsay shares that she was having a bad pain morning and hadn’t been sleeping well, so she had a cocktail or two, and then coupled it with a Benadryl. At one point during the recording, the Benadryl hit, and it was lights out for Lyndsay. She goes on to talk about the fact that she’s been struggling with anxiety and depression from her CRPS, so she’s been combating it with vodka or cannabis gummies.
He feels bad for her and isn’t sure what he can do to help her. He has been listening to an audiobook called, “Can’t Hurt Me” by David Goggins, where the author talks about the pain he endured while in the Marines. Listening to this book made Jon think about his relationship with Lyndsay, and about how he doesn’t feel like he can really blame her for the things she does because he doesn’t know the pain she is going through. He expands this thought by asking “how can we help those we don’t know how to help?”
She talks about a website called The Mighty, where people can share articles about things they are going through or experiences they have had related to chronic pain or a chronic illness, and how that sense of community has helped her. She shares that although she looks like a normal person on the outside when she is in pain, she makes a conscious decision each day to put a smile on her face. She doesn’t want the people in her life to downplay their pain because of her, instead she would rather hear about other’s pain so she doesn’t feel so alone.
He shares that he is going to start seeing a therapist to work through some stress and anger management issues he’s had for a while now. He talks about the culture clash that he’s been faced with being raised by his grandparents, and how he was a little reluctant to seek help because his grandfather always put down therapy or seeking help. He goes on to talk about the mind of matter aspect, and how we tend to make things more complicated in our minds than they really are.
Lyndsay moves on to talking about her weekend shenanigans, beginning with a cocktail tea party at the Mad Hatter (Gin &) Tea Party in Downtown LA, and immersive theater experience. This was followed by a trip to The Museum of Weed in Highland Park where she learned more about the health benefits of cannabis, since she exclusively uses weed to combat her CRPS because she doesn’t want to take opiates. Both events were super fun and unique!
Jon drops the bomb that he tried out a penis (cock) ring over the weekend the Lyndsay gifted him, and was not a fan. He has a friend that is the general manager of a local sex shop, so he asked her if he was using it properly. He felt like it was too tight, and when it took it off it left an imprint on his penis. He is open to the possibility of trying it out again in the future, but is skeptical.
